“When the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman”
One way the sovereignty of God is put on display is through the miraculous birth of His Son, Jesus Christ. It was miraculous not only because of the virgin birth, but also because of how God sovereignly orchestrated the time & the events surrounding when His Son would come.
The phrase, “fullness of time,” means that all things were healthy here on earth for Jesus to come on the scene, provide salvation, & spread the good news message to all people. It is also the very same phrase that speaks of a woman who is fully pregnant…in other words, the earth was ready to be delivered once & for all from sin.
Jesus came just at the right time in history to bring salvation & broadcast the good news of the gospel. This is evidenced by the following 4 reasons:
1. There was for the 1st time in history a common language called koine Greek. You could go anywhere in the known world & be understood. In fact, this is the language in which the New Testament was written.
2. There was an extensive highway system called the Appian Way. It connected all cities throughout the Roman Empire making travel that much easier.
3. There was the Pax-Romana, known as the peace of Rome. There were Roman outposts along travel routes to provide safety for travel along their roads. No longer was there a fear of being attacked or robbed on a long journey.
4. There was an attack on Jews by the Romans known as the great dispersion. This resulted in the Jews building synagogues for worship all around Roman cities. These synagogues allowed Jesus & the disciples to quick spread the gospel throughout the land.
